'.\ THE RISE AND FALL OF GOTTLIEB oOo \/ ) ( . ' --' Qbert is an icon of the arcades, right alongside characters like Pac-Man, Donkey Kong, and Frogger. In contrast to his fame, not as many are aware of how it all began. I've done my best to get to the bottom of things, but some info does still remain unclear. Our story begins in 1927 when David Gottlieb founded D. Gottlieb & CO (later shortened to Gottlieb) to make Pinball machines. As mentioned in prior episodes, these machines were primarily gambling devices as they lacked flippers to keep the ball in play once it was served. This would make Gottlieb a lot of money until legal crackdowns on these gambling machines would lead to a sharp decrease in sales. Needing something to turn things around, it was Gottlieb who in 1947, truly changed the game of pinball forever. Their Humpty Dumpty pinball table was the first pinball machine with flippers ever made. It was thanks in no small part to this machine that pinball was turned from a game of chance, to a game of skill. Other manufacturers would follow Gottlieb's lead, thus ending the legal crackdowns. Riding high with these new skill based machines, Gottlieb was able to usher in other innovations, such as numerical score counters, and eventually solid state pinball. For those not in the know, Solid State refers to technology with no moving parts. While this sounds silly when initially applied to a pinball machine, most machines of the day were electromechanical. This meant using switches, flip flops, and other on/off technologies to juggle voltages between different parts of large scale circuit and wiring. It'll do the job, it's a nightmare to work on and I don't imagine it was easy to design, build, or improve upon. Thus, by using the new technology of microprocessors available in the late 1970s, Gottlieb could reduce the burden of cost, upkeep, and end user cost of their machines. It's here where our story takes a turn. Also new in the late 1970s was none other than the new hotness of video games. Suddenly, interest was moving from pinball to these new electronic games, with Space Invaders, Donkey Kong, and others bringing about a boom for the companies involved. Gottlieb, having been recently bought by Columbia Pictures in 1976, would put considerable research and development into making games of their own, lest they fall behind in the market. To get the ball rolling initially, they would license two games from Japanese companies. The first of these was No Man's Land from Universal (not to be confused with the movie company), which was a tank combat game. The other was New York! New York! from Sigma Enterprises, which was a mix of space defense and space shooter- similar to Missile Command or Colony 7. Gottlieb's own inhouse video game development would be formed soon after, led by Howie Rubin and Ron Waxman, as Vice Presidents of Business Development and Engineering respectively. Tim Skelly (creator of games like Armor Attack and Star Castle) would be brought onboard to help kickstart design and within a few months Gottlieb would release their first independently created game, Reactor. The Game itself was very unique and revolved around taking out enemies while a reactor core slowly grew, making movement difficult. A life is lost if the reactor chamber is filled, but you can use control rods to reset the reactor. Caveman was the next, which combined Pinball and Video games together for quite the unique experience, not unlike Baby Pac-Man (which would be released a year later by rival company Bally Midway). The one most relevant was titled Protector, which was heavily inspired by Superman who had starred in two major movies around this time. The game itself underwent numerous name changes, alterations, and was based on saving falling civilians by flying your superhero around the screen. The game had been location tested to poor reception and, needing something to fill the void and make use of unsold hardware, a game was put into development with recent hire Warren Davis at the helm. Using an isometric block demo created by Kan Yabumoto (who would go on to create Mad Planets for Gottlieb) as a base, Davis along with artist Jeff Lee created a game which formed the blocks into a pyramid, with bouncing balls that fell down the screen. This evolved into having a character that would jump around the pyramid to avoid the balls. Needing a design for this character, Davis would use one created by Lee for a turret character. This character was orange with a long nose, no arms, and a combined head and torso. This character was initially called Hubert, but was later dubbed Qbert after the cubes he jumped over. His origins as a turret lead to a misconception that shooting was meant for the game, with an early title allegedly being "snots and boogers", but this is untrue. The game would evolve gradually from there with a chaser, Coily, being added alongside other enemies such as Ugg, Wrong Way, Slick, and Sam. Also added were disks to help avoid and temporarily defeat the Coily, and the ability to color cube tops by jumping on them (suggested by Waxman), thus giving a way to advance levels. This game was none other than Qbert, and it not only passed its location tests, but was a major success for Gottlieb. In response to the game's ease of play, Davis would develop a harder version dubbed Faster Harder More Challenging Qbert. This game didn't test well, likely due to it being tested so soon after the original's release. Mad Planets would be released soon after, but things would soon change. Gottlieb's parent company Columbia Pictures was acquired by the Coca-Cola Company, and Gottlieb by extension. The company would have its name changed to Mylstar Electronics, with subsequent projects being released under that name. Qbert himself would be heavily licensed for products and merchandise during the time, rivaling Pac-Man. Qbert would even get his own cartoon show produced by Hanna Barbera. An official sequel, dubbed Qbert Qubes, was released in which the player had to form cubes into certain orientations to form a tic-tac-toe pattern. After this point, the company would struggle. Their games would be released to only modest successes, didn't pass location tests, or were never released at all. Games would be released for home systems such as Qbert 3 and one final arcade game Exterminator (released under the name Premier Technology), but ultimately their doors would be shut permanently by the Coca-Cola Company. Its assets were held onto by Columbia Pictures, who themselves would be purchased by Sony. This led to a version of Qbert being released on the Playstation 1, developed by Hasbro Interactive (who held the rights to Atari's name at the time). Gottlieb was a company who introduced many firsts and brought joy to so many. As of the writing of this article, Qbert is still owned by Sony. While their demise was a shame, their legacy lives on. First released in the late 1990s, Half Life still remains one of the most important and well remembered FPS games out there. The game first began when former Microsoft employee, Gabe Newell along with others created a small game company called, Valve. Using the game engine that ran Quake as a base, they would further change it to create a modified engine called Gold Source. After demonstrating the game they'd made to run in the engine, Half Life, Sierra would agree to publish the game with a huge cash advance in exchange for ownership of the Half Life story and characters. This was likely due to Sierra's failed deal with ID Software to publish what eventually became Doom years earlier. After a number of design revisions, Half Life would be released to the market. In the game, you take control of Gordon Freeman, a scientist working at the Black Mesa Research facility. It starts off normally enough with the player traveling through the facility, interacting with other scientists and staff, all before a big test is set to take place. Upon dawning the HEV or Hazardous Environment suit, Gordon proceeds down to the test chamber. However, as he makes the journey something is clearly off. Scientists complaining about failing equipment and admitting to pushing their equipment beyond normal levels of safety for the all important test. These fears would be confirmed when, upon inserting a crystal into the Anti Mass Spectrometer, the machinery fails in spectacular fashion with Gordon being spirited away to many places before reappearing in the chamber. The scientists would in turn reveal that the failed test not only damaged many parts of the facility, but also resulted in a resonance cascade. For those not in the know, that means all hell is breaking loose. Flora and Fauna, beings from another dimension, appear throughout the facility as their world spills into the our. In an effort to put a stop to it, Gordon must travel throughout the facility while avoiding the hostile enemies across the way. Like most shooters from the time, you'll get a large number of weapons along the way, including the iconic crowbar, machine guns, shotguns, crossbows, and many more. Unlike many other shooters from the time, which typically used an episodic approach to their storytelling, Half Life instead makes its world feel interconnected with each stage fitting together into a seemingly continuous map. This allows the game to take advantage of environmental storytelling and, thanks to Gordon's silent nature, allows the player to act through Gordon as if it were actually there. This, paired with advanced enemy AI, makes for an immersive experience. Throughout the game, Gordon must face powerful enemies and solve puzzles to progress, but just when things feel like they couldn't get any worse, the military arrives. Under most circumstances, this would be a blessing for the staff who's facility was being overrun by hostile alien forces. However, these Marines were given explicit orders to not only take out the aliens, but also to eliminate any witnesses to the Black Mesa Incident, as it would come to be known. Now, Gordon must face off against these Marines and black operators. This makes for some difficult encounters and were the parts of the game I struggled with the most. Eventually, the military opts to withdraw allowing Gordon and the remaining scientists to attempt to close the rift that the aliens keep coming through. This fails, however, and Gordon must now make his way to the oldest parts of the facility where dark truths about the operations of Black Mesa come to light. Labs and test chambers reveal that Black Mesa not only long knew of the aliens, but had been performing unspeakable experiments on them. They had also been stealing crystals from the other dimension to use in their secret teleportation experiments. Upon arriving in the Lambda Complex, Gordon and the surviving scientists discover the rift is being kept open by an immensely powerful entity. And so, with full armaments and a long jump module, Gordon travels to the alien land of Xen. Making his way through Xen, Gordon fights the toughest enemies the game has to offer before facing off with the entity keeping the portal open, the Nililanth. When the player finally defeats the foe, a mysterious figure called the G-Man captures Gordon. He had been watching Gordon throughout his adventure and wished to employ him for his organization. At this point, the player can agree to join the G-Man or refuse. If the player joins, Gordon is put into stasis in another dimension, waiting for his assignment. If you refuse, Gordon is teleported back to Xen in a crowd of hostile aliens, with no weapons. This ending isn't canon. The game received very favorable reviews for the time and would lead to spin off games and new games made to promote the Gold Source development tools. But those are stories for another time. The games visuals hold up decently for their age, and the game was a fun time. If you want to try this classic for yourself, it's available on Steam with support for modern resolutions. The game is also available for Playstation 2, Dreamcast (unreleased, but still available online), and many other unofficial ports. The original Windows CD is also an option, but you may run into compatibility issues running it on more modern systems- it was originally released for Windows 95, 98, and NT4. Just be sure to stay away from Half Life Source. That game is best described as a glitch filled mess of broken enemies and allies, missing or broken textures, and glitches that would make Action 52 blush. So, be sure to avoid it like the plague to get the best experience. A full blown remake also exists called Black Mesa, which updates the original games visuals to match modern titles. Klasky Csupo: The Rise and Fall By BlueMSX If you watched Nickelodeon during the 1990s, the name Klasky Csupo may be familiar to you. While they're most well known for the cartoons they would go onto create for Nickelodeon, they go back further than you may think. The studio was founded in 1982 by Arlene Klasky as producer and her husband Gabor Csupo as animator. Things started small, with their base of operations being a spare room in their apartment, but their staff would eventually grow to nearly six hundred strong with a proper headquarters. While they'd done smaller work for commercials and logos prior, their first big success would be in 1987 when a new comedy show was being worked on at the FOX network: The Tracey Ullman Show. Klasky Csupo would be commissioned to produce the animated intro for the show, creating a good working relationship with the small studio and FOX. As time went on, a series of animated shorts created by Matt Groening were set to debut on The Tracey Ullman Show. This would go on to become The Simpsons, with the shorts created during this deal being the first ever Simpsons content. Notably, it would be Klasky Csupo who came up with the idea of giving the human characters their distinctive yellow skin. This was done to help distinguish The Simpsons characters from other shows airing at the time. Matt Groening would take this further, making sure not to include elements that were seen as more cutesy in animation. Some of these things, such as crossed eyed pupils would still slip their way into animation during these earlier productions. After 48 initial shorts Fox would continue its work with Klasky Csupo. This paired with the popularity of the shorts from The Tracey Ullman Show, FOX would decide to make The Simpsons a show unto themselves. Once again Klasky Csupo would be brought on to animate the show for its first three seasons. Klasky Csupo would also go onto produce the 1990 music video "Do the Bartman". Starting in 1992, FOX would opt to commission Gracie Films to animate The Simpsons going forward, but the exact reason for why this was done isn't known. Some claim higher ups at FOX were unhappy with the work Klasky Csupo had done thus far, while others claim there was internal pressure from Gracie Films to give them the contract. Other parties say that FOX was concerned about giving the smaller studio the task of creating the later seasons, given the huge success it had been, and the increasing pressure to conform to higher levels of quality. Whatever the case, this wasn't the end for Klasky Csupo. Having gained notoriety from their work on The Simpsons, another up and coming television studio, Nickelodeon, would begin to work with Klasky Csupo. Nickelodeon, which had been created in 1979 by Vivian Horner as a cable television channel, had been slowly gaining steam after being acquired by Viacom and re-focusing on children's and family content. The channel was mostly known for live action content such as Double Dare, The Third Eye, Salute Your Shorts, and The Adventures of Pete and Pete. However, Viacom was hoping to get into the lucrative cartoon business, likely in no small part to compete with the highly popular Cartoon Cartoons from Cartoon Network. To this end, Nickelodeon would begin creating their own original cartoon programming dubbed "Nicktoons," with Klasky Csupo supplying a new cartoon of their own, called Rugrats. Rugrats followed the adventures of a group of babies while they gained life experience, thereby teaching lessons to the viewers. Rugrats and other Nicktoons would be huge successes for Nickelodeon and, like FOX before them, would commission further productions from Klasky Csupo. These would be original shows like Duckman and Aaahh!!! Real Monsters. As time went on, Klasky Csupo would continue their work with Nickelodeon creating shows like The Wild Thornberrys after the cancellation of both Duckman and Aaahh!! Real Monsters. Rugrats would also receive a number of Klasky Csupo produced animated movies until 2003. This would be followed by spin offs of Rugrats such as Rugrats All Grown Up plus and further original programming like Rocket Power and As Told By Ginger. Around this time, Klasky Csupo would also begin doing smaller work for other companies and studios such as CBS and, interestingly, an animated music video for Dexter's Laboratory, which was airing on Cartoon Network at the time. One notable production from Klasky Csupo during this time was The Wacky Adventures of Ronald McDonald, which would be released straight to video available for purchase at McDonald's restaurants. Six stories were released over a five year period. The adventures followed Ronald McDonald (the company's mascot at the time) and his friends mixing both live action and animated segments, similar to the style used for The Super Mario Bros. Super Show! (Editor's note: I never heard of this series, but I will be watching it by the end of the day!) After 2003, things began to slow down at the studio, due in no small part to Nickelodeon severing ties with the studio. Strangely, this was done rather abruptly with a number of Nickelodeon animated productions that were in the works having to be cancelled. This would mark the beginning of the end for the small studio, with many of the productions and pilots they'd been creating simply not being picked up by any major networks. By 2011 the studio had shut its doors for the final time. There were attempts by Klasky and Csupo to bring the studio back on a smaller scale, but they weren't able to capture the same level of success they'd had in the years prior. They did, however, work on a reboot series for Rugrats which would air on Viacom's streaming service, Paramount+. However, due to the somewhat negative perception of reboots during this time, it never made a splash in the way expected. Certain creative decisions that made it different from the original likely compounded the issue. As of the writing of this article, no major productions are underway at the studio, aside from Gabor Csupo announcing a line of NFTs of all things. All in all, Klasky Csupo made a number of well known and well remembered shows over the course of its life, even if its current state does sour things. With their first major work, The Simpsons, still going strong all these years later, the mark they left on animation shouldn't be underestimated. Something that is lovely and warm with a timeless look. Well, do we have a film for you this month! Kodak Gold is a warm and bright film at a usable ISO 200 speed. This makes it a nice general film for a day out and about, or for general use if you have a flash on your camera. Let's talk about film emulsion (the stuff stuck to the plastic on the film). Gold 200 had contemporaries at one time. Gold 100 was a slower finer grain film and became the basis of Kodak Pro Image 100, which they released in 2019. Gold 400 is still around today but as a different film: Ultramax 400. Now why do I tell you about these two films when this is about Gold 200? Simple, because all 3 come from an emulsion formula. Pro Image 100 has finer details and is a flatter profile due to its slower speed. Ultramax is a great film for situations where you don't have a flash and need speed outdoors and sensitivity indoors on the same roll- all while providing punchy color and contrast. Gold would naturally sit in the middle right? Not quite. Gold has a warm feeling to it with saturated yellows, reds, and brown tones. Despite this saturation, it still renders cool tones like greens and blues very nicely. Its grain structure does place it between the two aforementioned films but the grain pattern is similar. It's visibly present, but in a good way. This color profile and detail makes Gold 200 feel special. One thing that makes a film like Kodak Gold 200 so special is its flexibility. It's able to push and pull rather well for a consumer film. If you want a film that has a better latitude than something like an Ultramax 400 without paying Portra prices, there isn't a better option. Its color is often compared to Kodak's Portra, which I don't think is quite fair. The color in Gold 200 is more saturated overall with more contrast. Despite this it renders skin tones quite well. The colors pop more without adding additional red into my subjects faces. This is why I love to use it on client shoots when I do portraits. As for actual resolution, you will find your typical 4x6 prints do well on this film. Same goes for 8x10 and 11x14 if your lens resolution allows for it. If you go too high though, the photo starts to really get soft up close. I should clarify that the resolution is good for "a consumer film," but doesn't touch that of a Portra 160 for instance. If you have to crop, be stingy. Gold 200 does have limits. Who is this film for? It's for people who just want to take a photo that always looks good. The color rendering of Gold is natural yet saturated. It's the film of choice for the hipster generation. Families who want a more natural photo would love this film. People learning how to use a camera can really enjoy the learning process with it. It's great for all kinds of shoots too. I've used it for still life as well and I really love the results. Kodak gold is available in only one speed: 200. It can be had in 35mm exposure rolls with 24 or 36 exposures. It is now available in 120 (medium format) spools. If you want to try film photography and want a good affordable color film, I prefer this over the Fuji options. It is a bit more expensive but it really does make for an absolutely stunning photo. Do you, or have you ever shot Kodak Gold 200? If so, let us know some of your favorite "Kodak Moments" that you created with this fantastic film! ------------------------------------------------------------------------- About Jon Mullin: Jon has been photographing professionally since 2008, but has been surrounded all his life by the small and quirky point and shoot Kodaks that his father collected. And hey, you know what? I'm not mad about it. Growing up, my sister and I could put hurtin' on some Kool-Aid. But I was the one after an endless quest to get free stuff (plus shipping and handling) with my Kool- Aid points. I had so many lofty dreams of getting free video games, toys, and more via seemingly endless pitchers of Purplesaurus Rex, Sharkleberry Fin, and Great Bluedini, but alas, it wasn't to be. It was still fun to dream though. If you sent away for free merch from Kool-Aid, I'd love to hear about what you got. Until next time, get your cups up.
